A Malcolm & Suzanne Rannoch Historical Mystery Novella 12

Malcolm and Suzanne Rannoch have fled with their family from fog-drenched England to golden Tuscany as the secrets of Suzanne's past unravel. On their way to their villa on Lake Como, they seek refuge with Suzanne's friend, Hortense Bonaparte, daughter of the Empress Josephine, stepdaughter of Napoleon.

The Rannochs arrive at Hortense's elegant château to find Hortense terrified and desperately in need of their services. And so, Suzanne and Malcolm find that even on the run from danger they are not done playing the spy game—or being drawn into intrigues that could affect the future of crowns and countries.

"A superb storyteller."— Deanna Raybourn

Okay, I'm not sure WHY I keep reading this series. For a group of people who are supposedly putting the past behind them, they sure spend an incredible amount of time rehashing it. We all know Suzanne is/was a spy. We all know she feels guilty and blames herself for everything. Move on. We all know Malcolm feels guilty, not sure why, since he is the one who was lied too. *SPOILER ALERT* Where to even begin with Rauol, He is Malcolm's biological Father, he is the one who impregnated Suzanne and then got her to marry his son, and basically pimped out his sons wife. (Granted before they were married). What a great guy and they all love him. Really have to stretch incredulity on this one. Not even going to mention the whole Cordelia and Harry saga or the David and Simon issue.
The whole guilt thing is getting old. It's just a rehash of the same thing over and over and it is tiresome. While I am a firm believer that one must suspend disbelief in reading fiction, the chances of people reacting to situations the way these characters do is just too unbelievable.

Mission for a Queen The Rannoch Fraser Mysteries Book 12 edition by Tracy Grant Romance eBooks Reviews

I have read all the books in this series and each is better than the last. While this is a short book, 94 pages, the author has packed it with details, emotion and surprises. The story picks up in the aftermath of London Gambit, the previous book in the series, Malcolm and Suzanne have left Britain for Italy but stop in Switzerland to visit Suzanne's friend, Queen Hortense and that is where the mystery regarding the bracelet begins. In other parts of the book we see Malcolm's and Suzanne's friends and family trying to deal with their lose. Even Carfax admits he will miss Malcolm. The story is well written and I explores outstanding issues with betrayal and trust. The solution to the mystery is satisfying, but the real story is the continuation of ongoing story of the characters. I am looking forward to the next full length book in the May 2017. This book can be read as stand alone, but there are references to previous book.
Another great story about Malcolm and Suzanne
This was not a favorite book of Tracy Grant. It had very little about Malcolm and Suzanne in it.
An extremely annoying and short book which substitutes static conversations between a large roster of unknown characters for a plot . There is no action just people talking or thinking about what they would say . Terrible!
A novella in which not much happens. Mostly a rehash with comments by friends and relatives remaining in london. There is one interesting discussion about trust which resonate in the future relationship of our intrepid heroes.
Following London Gambit, it seemed a good place to end the saga, but then I wanted to see Suzanne/Melanie and Malcolm (and their children, and O’Roarke and his new family) all settled and safe. But that would somehow violate the couple’s very natures (as well as Carfax’s), so I was pleased to see this short side story of the Rannochs’ journey away from London to a new life inTuscany take a side trip to rescue a situation for Hortense, Napoleon’s step-daughter, now in exile in Switzerland. Mission accomplished? Not the way the reader might expect for our intrepid adventurers. When ‘the game’s afoot’ there are certain aspects beyond even three super spies that cannot be predicted. This novella is packaged with the first two chapters of Grant’s next adventure in this long set of stories encompassing the Peninsular War, the Napoleonic Wars, and the Post-war years for Malcolm and Suzanne, whom I must now remember to call Melanie.
(This short story is only for followers of Grant's series. It will be of no interest and will make little sense to anyone reading Grant for the first time.)

There's not much that's new in this short story. When we last left Malcolm and Suzanne Rannoch, they were self deporting because of Suzanne's having been outed (to certain people) as a French spy. On their way to Italy they stop off to visit Queen Hortense, stepdaughter of Napoleon exiled in Switzerland, and Grant spends a few pages of the short with a jewelry theft that Malcolm, Suzanne, and Raoul resolve in a very desultory and uninteresting manner.

Most of the pages of the story are spent on friends and acquaintances left behind in England, who talk and talk and talk about how they miss M and S, how they wonder why M and S left, and where M and S are going. In addition, they all mull over their own personal relationships David and Simon's; David's and his father Carfax; Carfax and his wife; Cordelia and Harry, Bertrand and Rupert, etc., etc., etc.

This is good, I guess, if one has suffered some memory loss about all the characters. Grant helps us out with a memory tweak of past events and people. There's really not much that's new here. This should have been free or $0.99. It's boring and only serves to keep us thinking about Grant's couple until we purchase GILDED DECEITS in May, 2017.
